POWERSTATION STUDIOS
About
Power Station Studios Pompano Beach brings a 45 year legacy of awarded recording excellence to South Florida. In 2022, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the first session in this facility, Power Station Studios in Pompano Beach continues to uphold the “Power Station” tradition of studio recording.
In 2001, with blueprints of the original Power Station in hand, we adapted the same acoustical design pioneered by Tony Bongiovi at the legendary New York facility here at Power Station Pompano Beach.
This facility offers two masterfully equipped recording studios to meet the needs of even the most discerning recording projects. Both studios incorporate the best of modern digital, sought out vintage analog, and everything in between with the ability to integrate all recording technologies at any given point.
Our Genesis
The original Power Station in New York City, completed in 1977, set the standard that other studios are still compared to today. The unique acoustic design combined with emphasized sight-lines and other unparalleled characteristics made the Power Station design one of the most awarded in the world.
The original studio was built in what once was a Consolidated Edison “Con-Ed” power plant. In 1977, Tony Bongiovi acquired the building and created what became one of the world’s most decorated recording studios of all time.

Tony’s design was inspired by his time at Motown Records in Detroit, Michigan, the home of the “Motown Sound.” During the early to mid-1960s, Tony earned a spot behind the console at Motown, engineering many of the Motown hits by Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and more.
In the days of Motown, recording studios were generally acoustically “dead” spaces. Motown took an innovative approach to create one of the first “live” recording spaces. More importantly, Tony quickly understood this concept and understood the positive effects these acoustical characteristics had on the artist’s performances.
Tony adapted the fundamentals of the Motown concept and developed an innovative approach, and created a studio design based on an acoustic algorithm specifically for the recording environment. Tony’s studio design leads the industry with countless hit records and awards.

Power Station won numerous awards for its unique acoustic design, including “The Les Paul Tec Award” 6 consecutive times. (After the sixth award, NAMM added a limit to how many times a prize could be won).
The Power Station design and studio “sound” proved to be the pillar of recording excellence, platinum record after platinum record.
The studio grew to house six recording studios and continued to host recording sessions for some of the world’s most successful and famous artists.
In 1996 Tony sold the famous studio to Avatar Entertainment Corporation and was renamed “Avatar Studios” The facility operated under this moniker until going up for sale in 2016.

The Legend Lives On
In 2017, a landmark public-private partnership brought together Berklee School of Music, a private investment, and the city of New York to purchase the famous facility.
Berklee renovated the entire facility however kept the award-winning studio control rooms and live studio rooms to the original acoustic specifications and adapted modern video and lighting to enhance the current features of today’s production technology.
To honor the studio’s legacy, Berklee renamed the studio, “Power Station at BerkleeNYC” and the legend continues.
Power Station Pompano Beach is proud to have come from such a prominent and culture rich legacy. We strive every day to honor this history and respect the name for which it continues to define.
